Pancreatic β-cells in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus: different pathways to failure

imgActu

Loss of functional beta cell mass is the key mechanism leading to the two main forms of diabetes mellitus, type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Diabetes is a major public health issue, affecting nearly 10% of the Belgian population. The article by Decio L. Eizirik and co-workers discusses their own and others work in the field that clarifies the mechanisms leading to pancreatic beta cell failure in diabetes and the role for candidate genes for diabetes in this process. The article provides the rationale for the research lines that Prof. Eizirik is pursuing with Welbio support.
