Cédric Blanpain (WEL Research Institute - ULB) is the winner of the Momentum Award 2023 of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR). This is the first time that such a prestigious award has been given to a researcher based in Europe.

"The ISSCR Momentum Award recognises the outstanding achievements of a researcher whose innovative research has established a major field of stem cell research with a solid trajectory for future success," says the ISSCR.

Cédric Blanpain uses multidisciplinary and quantitative approaches to study the role of stem cells during development, homeostasis and cancer.  His group has discovered the dynamics of stem cells acting during development, homeostasis and repair of the epidermis, as well as a new paradigm of segregation of different cell subtypes in the mammary gland and prostate.  His laboratory has been a pioneer in identifying the cellular origin of skin and breast cancers.  The group developed new approaches to unravel the mechanisms regulating tumour states responsible for tumour growth, metastasis and resistance to cancer therapies.

The Momentum Award will be presented to Cédric Blanpain at the annual meeting of the ISSCR in Boston in June 2023.  On this occasion, he will give a presentation of his work during a plenary session.
